Richard David Mortell, 94, of Stevens Point, WI, died at Aspirus Hospital in Stevens Point, WI, on Saturday morning, February 18, 2023. The son of Dr. C.A. and Laura (Nolan) Mortell, he was born in Fond du Lac, WI.
He met his true love, Nancy Jean Travers while working at Camp Tecumseh in Eagle River, WI. They married the following summer and were together for 38 years before she died in 1998.
Richard worked as a teacher his whole life. He taught in Marshfield, Kimberly, Eagle River, and Mc Farland, WI, but he spent most of his time in the DC Everest School District.
He worked as a school psychologist in Skagit Valley, Washington, for two years after he retired in 1988. Richard was in the Korean War and loved to talk about the time Marilyn Monroe performed for the troops, and his unit was in charge of her security.
He got a picture of her blowing kisses at him and the other soldiers with his movie camera. Richard liked telling stories about the four summers he worked for the Ohio Match Company in a lumber camp in St. Maries, Idaho.

He worked for the Boy Scouts of America for a long time because he liked being outside and helping young people. He was one of the first leaders of Kronenwetter, Wisconsin’s Troop 451.
He is survived by his children David (Mihoko) Mortell of Peachtree City, GA, Mary (Raymond Cal) Mortell-Ferrone of Stevens Point, WI, Michael (Teresa) Mortell of St. Francis, WI, Katie (John) Lehnen of Wind Lake, WI, and his grandchildren Jack, Erin, Kou, Joseph, Matthew, Colleen, Grace, Molly, and Sean.
Richard’s parents, Wm. Patrick Mortell (Magaret), Tom Mortell (Adele), and Mary Dunphy, all died before him (Paul). People will remember Richard for being kind, giving, and willing to try new things.
Instead of flowers, the family would like donations to the children’s charity of your choice. On Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 11 a.m., Richard’s Christian burial will be held at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River, WI.
