California School Sets Record As 12-Year-Old Graduates College

This past week, a 12-year-old student at Fullerton College in California became the institution’s youngest graduate.

Clovis Hung, who attended his first college class when he was nine, was inspired to enroll in school by a healthy desire to compete with his peers.

He stated that he was inspired to achieve the same level of success after learning about Jack Rico, a former student at Fullerton College who, at the age of 13, established a new record for being the college’s youngest graduate.

“I also wanted to be the youngest graduate,” Hung told the KABC news station in Fullerton“I didn’t expect to beat him.”

Hung graduated from Fullerton on Saturday alongside students who were, on average, ten years older than him. He received five A.A.s in different disciplines, including history, social sciences, social behavior and self-development, arts and human expression, and mathematics.

Next year, he wants to go after another one, he said.

NB News tweeted that Clovis Hung started college when he was just 9 years old:

Hung enrolled in classes at Fullerton under the school’s Special Admit program to earn college credit. The school claims in a press release that Hung’s mother used a hybrid approach to education in which he took college and homeschooling courses.

“Clovis is super inquisitive, mature, diligent, self-disciplined and highly motivated,” The statement was made by Song Choi, Hung’s mother. “He is also very curious and traditional public schools could not satisfy his curiosity, therefore, the best option was college.”

Hung discovered that his new professors and classmates helped him adjust to the challenges of attending college in person. He claimed the students greeted him like an old friend and were eager to converse with him about lessons.

“When I had questions, I asked them, and if they had questions, they’d ask me,” Hung stated. “They treated me like a little brother.”

The announcement stated that several of his teachers were concerned about how he would interact with his bigger classmates, but they quickly realized their worries were unfounded.

“Clovis has been a great mixture of ‘kid’ and college student,” Professor of Biology at Fullerton Fullerton Kenneth Collins remarked. “He is mature enough that the other students take him seriously, but enough of a kid that they look after him like a younger brother and cheer him on.”

Like many other new graduates, Hung wants to spend his summer exploring the world. In addition to being a Boy Scout and playing basketball five days a week, his hobbies include Minecraft and Roblox.

“I also just joined the Civic Air Patrol and hope to get my pilot license at age 16,”  he declared in the press release.
