Steve Crump Obituary
Steve Crump, a prominent Charlotte journalist, died Thursday, according to WBTV-TV.
Crump’s death was revealed by the station on Thursday, with the station describing him as “the conscience of the WBTV newsroom.” He died of colon cancer following a five-year fight.
Steve was a dedicated newsman who spent decades telling the stories of the greater Charlotte community with passion. He was also a beloved colleague, friend, and mentor to many, both in the WBTV newsroom and around the country.
“Our hearts are breaking as we share the news of the passing of our beloved Steve,” Steve’s wife, Cathy Crump, said in a statement on Thursday. “He was determined to spread the truth, and broadcasting became the vehicle of choice. His genuine calling was to be a part of the lives of those in his community and to share their truths. We shall stand firm and never forget his passion.
In 1980, he graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and began working for WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.
Before coming to Charlotte in April 1984, his work took him to various other news stations across the country. WBTV recognized him for his coverage of various important events, including the trial of former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth and the Jim Bakker trial.
Crump has received various prizes and honors throughout his career, including the National Association of Black Journalists’ first-ever Journalist of the Year Award in 2017.
“It is with great sadness that WBTV announces the passing of Steve Crump,” the news station said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s wife, Cathy, and with his many friends who will be touched by his loss.”

Crump revealed his cancer fight less than a month ago. Crump revealed that one doctor recommended hospice care for him only 12 hours after his initial diagnosis.
His experience inspired him to spread the word about potentially life-saving colon cancer screenings. He also ascribed his ability to survive the journey to his strong Christian faith, his wife’s constant care, and his medical staff.
“Steve Crump set the standard for professionalism and integrity in bringing the news to the people of Charlotte,” Governor Roy Cooper stated Thursday on social media. “He also set a strong example in his long fight against cancer and our prayers go out to Steve’s family, friends and loyal viewers.”
