After an end-of-the-year evaluation found that only five of the school’s 33 seniors had satisfied the prerequisites to graduate, the principal of a small high school in a remote area of Texas postponed the graduation ceremony as per the head of the local school district’s education department.
“Marlin High School has announced that high school graduation will be rescheduled for June,” a Marlin Independent School District letter was published on Facebook.
“The decision by the high school to postpone graduation will provide more time for students to meet necessary requirements for graduation.”
The school, located roughly 25 miles southeast of Waco, has many pupils who “did not meet requirements due to attendance or grades,” as per the letter.
The communication from the school district also included a statement that it had “affirmed its commitment to providing necessary resources and support for students.”
Last week, Superintendent Darryl Henson required parents of seniors to attend a meeting.
“The state of Texas has guidelines for graduation,” Henson said during Wednesday’s conference call. “This is not a dance floor. … It’s not a homecoming pep rally. This is graduation.”
