Officials reported Wednesday that three Marine lance corporals from Camp Lejeune were discovered deαd in a vehicle outside a North Carolina business on Sunday morning d!ed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
The bodies were discovered at 9 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a Hampstead convenience store, roughly an hour from the military training complex.
According to the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a missing person complaint. On Sunday morning, the office received a phone call from a woman who stated her Marine son had failed to arrive on a flight to Oklahoma the night before.
Deputies discovered the body of the missing Marine and the bodies of the two other Marines inside the car later that morning.
Autopsies done Wednesday by the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office indicated that all deαths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. There were no further details provided about the circumstances surrounding their deαths.
Tanner J. Kaltenberg, 19, of Madison, Wisconsin, Merax C. Dockery, 23, of Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, and Ivan R. Garcia, 23, of Naples, Florida, were named by the US Marine Corps on Tuesday. As motor vehicle operators, all three served with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, and the 2nd Marine Logistics Group. They were in a privately owned automobile.
Garcia has been on active duty the longest of the three since July 2019. Dockery joined the military in June 2020, and Kaltenberg joined the army in May 2021.
Garcia served at Parris Island, SC, Camp Lejeune, NC, and Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He has received the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Kaltenberg served at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and in San Diego. He has received the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Medal, the Navy Arctic Service Ribbon, and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.
Dockery was stationed in San Diego, California, Camp Pendleton, California, and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He has received the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.
“I am saddened by the timeless and tragic death of these three young men, who served our country honorably. Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families and colleagues during this time,” Pender County Sheriff Alan W. Cutler said.
