Irene Kelly was born on August 2, 1964, in the Bronx, New York parents Catherine and Edward Kelly. She spent her early youth in California, Maryland, and, by 1st grade, Vienna, Virginia, where she grew up with her five brothers.

She attended James Madison High School before attending the College of William and Mary to study Math and Religion. Following graduation, she worked as a missionary with NET Ministries from 1986 to 1987, traveling the country spreading the Gospel through youth retreats. This event shaped Irene’s interest and enthusiasm for youth ministry.

Irene went on to earn her Master’s degree in Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where she met longtime friends who eventually introduced her to her husband, Joe. She returned to Virginia and taught at Bishop O’Connell High School before becoming a Youth Minister at St. Thomas à Becket Parish.
