A Look at John Madden’s Impactful Years
On April 10, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota, John Earl Madden was born. He was the son of Earl Russell Madden (1905–1961) and Mary Madden (1917–2011). The Madden family moved to Daly City, California, which is located south of San Francisco, when John was a young child. John’s father is an auto mechanic.
John Robinson graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Catholic parochial school, in 1950. Afterward, he enrolled at Jefferson High School, from which he graduated in 1954. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 until 1978.
The team participated in seven AFL/AFC Championship Games, won seven division titles, made eight postseason trips, and won its first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI during that span. Having never had a losing season, Madden has the highest winning percentage of all coaches.
