DuVal High School Student Loses Life in Lanham, Maryland Shooting Near School

A DuVal High School student was tragically shot Monday afternoon in September 2023 in Lanham, Maryland, Just two weeks into the school year.

For about two hours after the shooting, DuVal and another local school were placed on lockdown.

The student was taken to a hospital in severe condition and died there. The victim was a student, according to Prince George’s County Public Schools. Her name and age have not yet been disclosed, but neighbors told News4’s Jackie Bensen that the girl was 16 years old.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the tragic loss of a DuVal High School student,” the school district said in a statement issued shortly after the girl’s death was reported by authorities.

During this incredibly difficult time,” the school district wrote, “Prince George’s County Public Schools extends our thoughts and deepest condolences to the student’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Just after 3:30 p.m., she was shot near the intersection of Palamar Drive and Woodstream Drive, close to DuVal High School. Shots were fired amid a dispute between two groups, and the victim was struck. She was not the intended target.

At the time of the shooting, DuVal and another nearby school, Robert Goddard Montessori School, were open for after-school activities. They were put on lockdown for over two hours as police looked for a suspect. Lockdowns were lifted just before 5:15 p.m.

Following the firing, personal goods, including a computer case given by the school system, were thrown on the ground.

This is not an easy day in Prince George’s County, and we shouldn’t be here today, Barry Stanton, the county’s deputy chief administrative officer for public safety and homeland security. This is aggravating. It’s mind-boggling to witness one of our beautiful youngsters subjected to such senseless violence.

DuVal High School was set to be in the second batch of schools to receive security upgrades, Superintendent Millard House II, but that process will be accelerated.

Prince George’s County police, this is an ongoing investigation. Detectives are on the scene working to establish a suspect(s) and a motive in this case, police announced about 5:30 p.m.

It’s possible that some additional witnesses and students saw the gunfire and fled in panic. Detectives want to speak with anyone who has additional information.

The school district announced on Tuesday, 12, September, 2023 that grief counselors and mental health specialists would be on the DuVal campus “to support students and staff as they cope with this loss.”

The shooting occurred less than two weeks into the school year. All public school students in the county began classes on August 28.
