On Wednesday, a Florida judge ordered that a re-enactment of the 2018 school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, may be videotaped as part of the civil complaint against resource officer Scot Peterson for allegedly failing to protect children.
The verdict means that the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting will be reenacted in the coming weeks, with a gunman stalking the corridors of the high school building in Parkland, roughly 30 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
He’ll be armed with an assault gun that shoots blanks rather than live shots. The shooting ki!!ed 17 individuals and injured another 17.
The high school building, expected to be demolished following Peterson’s trial, still has bullet holes and bloodstains from the sh00ting. The re-enactment results from a lawsuit from some of the victims’ relatives.
They allege that Peterson, a Broward County sheriff’s deputy assigned to the school, failed to protect students and instructors during the shooting. In a separate criminal hearing last month, Peterson was acquitted of 11 counts of child maltreatment, culpable carelessness, and perjury.
Broward County Circuit Court Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips said legal teams for the defense and the plaintiffs could stage their re-enactments. Still, she would rule whether their video or audio recordings could be disclosed to the jury later.
Lawyers for the families contended that a reenactment would demonstrate that Peterson would have heard the 70 or more gunshots but decided to escape the assailant, leaving students unprotected.
In the virtual hearing, David Brill, an attorney for the victims’ families, stated that the motion was made because they “don’t want to leave anything to chance” following Peterson’s acquittal in the criminal case.

Michael Piper, Peterson’s attorney, objected to the re-enactments, claiming they would undoubtedly be turned into “a self-serving documentary” by the plaintiffs.
The judge accepted the motion after specifying that adjacent homeowners be alerted in advance and that the re-enactment takes place before the start of the school year in late August.
