Mary Thompson Obituary: Dedicated Secretary at West High School for 25 Years

After a brief fight with lung cancer, Mary Pat Thompson, 69, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023, in a hospital in her hometown.

The funeral will take place at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Tuesday at 12:30 PM. Reverend David Hemann will preside. Calvary Cemetery is being used for the burial. On Tuesday, between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, friends and relatives are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral home.

The daughter of Eugene and Rose Ann (O’Kane) O’Neill, Mary Pat was born on June 29, 1953, in Sioux City. She attended Heelan High School and grew up in South Sioux City, where she eventually graduated.

Mary Pat married the man she would spend the rest of her life with, Phillip Thompson, on August 10, 1974, in South Sioux City.

Mary Pat spent years as an employee at Hair By Rick before retiring from the Sioux City Community School District, where she had worked for the past 25 years as a secretary at West High School. She took pleasure in many activities, including reading, crocheting, and swimming, but nothing brought her more delight than time spent with her grandkids.

Mary Pat was predeceased by her sibling Dean Albrecht, her brother Collin Kentopp, and her niece Melissa Grossman.

Flowers are optional; donations in her memory can be sent to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation or the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
