Local news says that a first-grade teacher in Missouri found a loaded gun in the bag of a five-year-old on Friday. Around 8:45 a.m., the teacher found the gun at Principia Lower School in Town and Country, Mo., about 20 minutes west of St. Louis.
FOX 2 said the staff took the gun and gave it to the police when they arrived. Merry Sorrells, in charge of schools at Principia, told the station the whole school was told about what happened.
Sorrels said, “We wanted our parents to know that there was never a risk or a threat to any of our students or community members,”
James Cavins, the chief of police in Town & Country, said that his department thinks the incident was “inadvertent” and that the student did not mean to hurt anyone. KMOV also said that the student’s parents were not found to have been careless.
Last month, a 6-year-old first grader at an elementary school in Virginia shot a teacher during a fight in the classroom. The teacher was left with “life-threatening” injuries; parents have called for more classroom safety and supervision.
Last week, another student told a teacher that a 6-year-old boy in North Carolina had an unloaded 9mm gun in his backpack. The teacher could take the child out of the classroom and tie up the backpack.
