The Supreme Court has concluded its more than three-hour discussion on the Biden administration’s authority to cancel over $500 billion in student loan debt without getting explicit consent from Congress.

Many of the 6-3 majority of conservative justices on the court expressed doubt about Biden’s power and questioned the fairness of a program that aids certain debtors but not others.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, liberal justices backed the ability of the Education Department to cancel loan debt. Also, they questioned whether the two people and the six Republican-led states that filed the legal challenges were specifically injured by the debt relief program, as they must be in order to have a legal basis to stop it.
