Rylee J. Hatlen, 19, was named Thursday as the victim of a fatal shooting in Portland’s Pearl District.
Officers from the Central Precinct discovered Hatlen with a gunshot wound near Northwest Couch Street and Broadway at 2 a.m. Sunday.
She was still breathing when police and fire crews arrived, but she d!ed at the scene despite efforts to save her life, according to authorities.
The case is being investigated as a homicide by detectives. There has been no announcement of arrests or suspect information.
Hatlen graduated from Gresham’s Rosemary Anderson High School in 2021. In “The Safest Place,” the Oregonian/OregonLive reported last year on the small alternative school’s loss of children to violence.
Five students were killed in shootings from the summer of 2020 through the beginning of January 2022. Another student was stabbed, two were killed in automobile accidents, and at least two more students who survived were injured by gunfire.
Hatlen’s death is the city’s 52nd homicide this year, compared to 59 deaths at the same time last year, when the city recorded 101 homicides, the majority of which were deadly gunshots.
