Tropical Cyclone Idalia Develops Over the Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Idalia is expected to become a hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, prompting storm surge and hurricane warnings for parts of Cuba and the Florida Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center issued a storm surge watch for the Gulf Coast from Chokoloskee to Indian Pass on Sunday afternoon, as well as a hurricane watch from Englewood to Indian Pass. Tampa Bay is included in both timepieces.

A tropical storm warning has also been issued for the Gulf Coast from Englewood to Chokoloskee, as well as the Dry Tortugas.

As of Sunday, 27, 2023 night, Idalia had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was about 145 miles south of Cuba. It had been moving erratically and was “nearly stationary” as of 11 p.m. ET Sunday, although it was projected to move north-northeast on Monday, 28, 2023. On Monday, Idalia is projected to intensify into a hurricane.

Idalia’s core will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Monday, 28, August, and Tuesday, 2023,  before approaching the northeast Gulf Coast late Tuesday. By the time it approaches Florida, the storm is expected to be “near or at major hurricane intensity,” which means Category 3 or higher.

“There is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds along portions of the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle beginning as early as Tuesday,” the NHC said.

Flooding from heavy rain is expected in parts of the southeast United States by the middle to late week.
