This year, Taraji P. Henson, an award-winning actress, made sure to honor her son Marcell Johnson on National Sons Day. Following the death of her high school boyfriend, William LaMarr “Mark” Johnson, at the age of 34 in 2003, the 51-year-old Hollywood beauty brought her son, 27, into the world.

Marcell, the actress’s only son, was born on May 10, 1994, to Taraji and her high school sweetheart William. In the surge in police killings, Taraji shared her concerns as a Black mother of a Black son in a conversation with PEOPLE’s Jess Cagle on The Jess Cagle conversation in 2019. She stated:
“He has a really good heart. It’s just hard to know that the world can pick him out and turn him into a monster at any given moment, That’s what I fear, that’s something that I carry — I think every Black mother does. All parents worry about their kids, but then when you see the news and you see people getting off for killing innocent children with no weapon it’s like, that doesn’t exempt my son.”
Marcell’s Father Passed Away When He Was a Child
Marcell’s father William died from a stabbing at the age of 34, when Marcell was only 9 years old. The circumstances surrounding his death are horrifying.
Taraji recalls not being able to break the news to her kid and telling him that he had died in an accident in an episode of her Facebook Watch series “Peace of Mind with Taraji” that aired in January. Marcell discovered the truth later on. She stated:
“My son’s father was suddenly taken — murdered — when he was 9, and I didn’t know how to tell him that. I couldn’t tell him he was murdered, so I told him he died in an accident, Later on in life he found out and he came back to me and was like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me my daddy was murdered?’ And so then we had to get therapy. . . It was the worst way you could die, and I just didn’t have the words. I didn’t know how to tell a 9-year-old.”
Marcell Pursues a Career in Acting Similar to That of His Mother
Given that Marcell has a career in Hollywood that includes work both in front of and behind the camera, it seems that the apple does not fall too far from the tree.
Marcell has appeared in the television series Detroiters, and the movies Misled, Needlestick, A Girl Like Her, and Little with Issa Rae and Mari Martin. She has also worked behind the scenes on the movie.

Marcell Has Acted in Television Series Besides His Mother
Marcell’s most well-known TV credit to date is from the critically acclaimed Fox drama series Empire, in which his well-known mother plays Cookie Lyon. The actor plays Marcel, a character who shares the small screen with his strong mother, in 16 episodes.
In 2015, Taraji informed Uptown magazine that her son would be attending Howard University, her former school. She revealed that campus police at the University of Southern California had profiled Marcell based on his race, which prompted the admission. Taraji stated:
“I’m not paying $50K so I can’t sleep at night wondering is this the night my son is getting racially profiled on campus,”
Soon after, John Thomas, the director of campus public safety at USC, issued a statement announcing the start of an investigation. Later, the actress issued an apology on social media for her remarks, writing:
“A mother’s job is not easy and neither is a police officer’s. Sometimes as humans we overreact without gathering all of the facts. As a mother in this case I overreacted and for that I apologize.”
