Tropical Storm Hilary’s heavy rains could trigger flooding and landslides in central and eastern Oregon.
Hilary made landfall on Mexico’s Baja California coast on Sunday, but its effects are expected to be felt as far away as Idaho in the coming days.
According to the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, flood watches are in effect for portions of eastern and central Oregon, including the Grande Ronde Valley, Northern Blue Mountains, Southern Blue Mountains, Wallowa County, Baker County, Harney County, Malheur County, the Lower Treasure Valley, John Day Basin, and Ochoco-John Day Highlands, from Sunday evening to Tuesday afternoon.
People in these areas should remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution when traveling, especially at night. Debris flows are highly destructive landslides that travel faster than humans can run and may transport stones and logs that endanger people and structures.

“Unusual sounds might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together,” wrote Alex Lopez, the spokesperson, in a news release Sunday. “A trickle of falling mud or debris may precede larger landslides. If you think there is danger of a landslide, leave immediately.”
