Nathan Van Hooydonck, a Jumbo-Visma rider, is said to be in “hopeful” condition after being brought to the hospital after a serious automobile collision at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Disaster struck on September 12, 2023. Van Hooydonck was in a life-threatening vehicle accident while driving with his pregnant wife.

With his pregnant wife in the passenger seat, the 27-year-old was waiting at a roundabout in Kalmthout, north of Antwerp. He allegedly slumped while waiting at a crosswalk, causing an unintentional acceleration of traffic.

Van Hooydonck’s Volkswagen allegedly collided with five other vehicles on the other side of the intersection before coming to a halt. Van Hooydonck and his wife were resuscitated at the scene before being taken to Antwerp University Hospital.

“We can confirm that earlier today our rider Nathan van Hooydonck became unwell while driving his car, leading to his involvement in a traffic accident. He was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he is receiving good medical care. We cannot confirm rumors that his condition is critical. He is undergoing further medical examinations. Thank you all for your messages to Nathan and the team,” the team wrote in a statement posted to Twitter.

The driver was resuscitated on the scene and sent to the hospital in critical condition. His pregnant wife, who was seated next to him, was not hurt, but she was transported to the hospital for a check-up as well.

His health situation is not critical. Further medical examinations have to determine why Nathan became unwell while driving his car. We want to thank everyone for the messages and the medical staff in the hospital for taking such good care of Nathan and his family.
