At the age of one, Dorsey’s mother brought him to Florida from his birthplace of Carmel, Indiana. His childhood home was Riviera Beach, a sleepy community north of West Palm Beach in Palm Beach County. 1979 saw him graduate from Nashua, New Hampshire’s Bishop Guertin High School.

While attending Auburn University, Dorsey wrote about racism for The Auburn Plainsman, the student newspaper. He later rose to the position of editor of the publication. Dorsey earned a bachelor’s degree in transportation in 1983.

He relocated to Montgomery, Alabama, after graduating, where he worked as a police reporter for a neighbourhood newspaper. Dorsey moved to Tampa, Florida, in 1987 and started working as a reporter for The Tampa Tribune. See the tweet for more details:

He held many positions with the newspaper until leaving in 1999 to pursue a career as a full-time writer, including political reporter, copy desk editor, news coordinator, and correspondent in the Tribune’s Tallahassee bureau.

With his wife and two daughters, Dorsey made his home in Tampa. Because of his mother and the New Hampshire-born nuns and brothers who taught him at Bishop Guertin High School, he grew up to be a diehard Boston Red Sox fan. He lived in the same city and was a fan of the Tampa Bay Rays.
